Multisig Cold Storage Setup Checklist

Multisig removes the single point of failure a lone seed phrase creates. Work through this in order — the sequence matters as much as the steps.

Why multisig, not a single seed

A single-signature wallet has one point of failure: whoever has the seed phrase has the funds, whether that's you on a good day or a thief on a bad one. Multisig requires signatures from multiple independent keys — typically 2-of-3 — so no single compromised device, coerced disclosure, or lost backup is enough on its own to move funds or lock you out permanently.
The most common real-world setup: three hardware wallets, ideally from different manufacturers, stored in three separate physical locations, with any two required to sign a transaction. Services like Casa and Unchained coordinate this for you and hold a recovery key as a backstop; Sparrow Wallet lets technically comfortable users build the same setup themselves for free.

Frequently asked questions

What is multisig?

A wallet setup requiring signatures from multiple keys — commonly 2-of-3 — to move funds, so a single lost or compromised device or seed phrase can't move the money by itself.

What quorum should I use — 2-of-3 or 3-of-5?

2-of-3 is the standard for individuals: it survives losing any one device while still requiring collusion or compromise of two to steal funds. 3-of-5 suits larger holdings or shared custody among multiple people who each want a key.

Do I need different hardware wallet brands for multisig?

It's recommended, not required. Using different manufacturers for each key protects against a single brand's supply-chain compromise or firmware vulnerability affecting all your keys at once.
SCAM WARNING
No legitimate service will ever ask for your seed phrase or private keys, in multisig or otherwise. Anyone who does is stealing from you.
