What bitcoin dominance actually tells you
Bitcoin dominance is bitcoin's market cap divided by the total crypto market cap. It isn't a price — it's a share. Bitcoin's own price can rise while its dominance falls, if altcoins are rising faster.
Dominance tends to climb when capital rotates toward bitcoin during risk-off periods, or early in a new cycle before speculative capital spreads into smaller coins. It tends to fall during "alt season," when altcoins meaningfully outperform bitcoin and pull a larger share of total market cap toward themselves.
It's a useful gauge of internal crypto risk appetite, not a signal about bitcoin's absolute value. Read it alongside price, not instead of it.
