Muun Review (2026): One Balance, Zero Concepts to Learn
OUR VERDICT
SIMPLEST START
8.2/10
The Muun pitch is radical simplicity: one balance that pays both on-chain and Lightning invoices, no channels or swap concepts visible anywhere, and a recovery scheme that does not even start with a seed phrase. It is the easiest first step into self-custody we tested — with tradeoffs in fees and orthodoxy that matter as you grow.
WHAT WE LIKED
+Easiest self-custody onboarding anywhere
+One balance for on-chain + Lightning, invisible plumbing
+Self-custodial with a thoughtful recovery kit
+Clean, calm interface
WHAT WE DIDN'T
−On-chain fees run higher due to its swap model
−Non-standard recovery (not a plain BIP-39 seed)
−Busy mempools make small payments expensive
Specs at a glance
Current as of June 2026.
Simplicity as strategy
Muun hides every concept that scares newcomers off self-custody: no channels, no two balances, no fee-rate slider on day one. You install it and it works. As a bridge from Cash App to real self-custody, that design earns its place.
What the simplicity costs
Muun executes Lightning payments through swaps that touch the chain more than native solutions, so fees rise when the network is busy. Its recovery model — an encrypted kit rather than a bare seed — is well-designed but non-standard, which some see as lock-in.
Growing out of it
That is not an insult — it is the product working. Start with Muun; when fees start to annoy you or you want standards, graduate to Phoenix for Lightning and hardware for savings.
Use it if…
You are leaving custodial apps for the first time and want the gentlest landing.
Skip it if…
You pay over Lightning often (fees add up) or insist on standard BIP-39 recovery.
Common questions
Is Muun custodial?
No — it is self-custodial with a 2-of-2 model where you hold the keys and the recovery kit restores full control independently.
Why are my fees high?
The unified balance uses on-chain swaps for Lightning payments; in busy mempools those swaps cost real money. Native Lightning wallets avoid most of it.
Where is my seed phrase?
Muun uses a recovery code plus an emergency kit PDF instead of a classic 12-word seed. Store both; together they restore your funds in any circumstance.
