Onboarding: 10 minutes to first buy
ID verification cleared in minutes, the bank link worked first try, and the app walks you through your first purchase without jargon. Nothing else we tested comes close for a first-timer. The tradeoff is that the easy path is the expensive path: the big blue button routes you through instant buy, where fees run 3–4× what the same order costs on Advanced Trade — same account, different screen.
The withdrawal test
We moved bitcoin to a hardware wallet the same day we bought it. No fee, no friction, confirmed on-chain within the hour. An exchange that makes leaving easy is an exchange you can trust with arriving — and free BTC withdrawals remain rare among US platforms.
When things go wrong: support
Our test ticket (a locked recurring buy) took 3 days for a human response — acceptable, not great. Phone support exists for account takeovers, which matters more. As a publicly traded company Coinbase publishes audited financials, which is the strongest solvency signal available in this industry.

Is Coinbase safe?
As safe as a custodial exchange gets — publicly traded, audited, most assets in cold storage. But exchange accounts are for buying, not storing: withdraw to self-custody for long-term holdings.
How do I avoid the high fees?
Use Advanced Trade (same account, different screen) and fund with a bank transfer instead of a card. That alone cuts most costs by more than half.
Coinbase or an ETF?
Buy on Coinbase if you want real bitcoin you can withdraw; buy an ETF if you want exposure inside a retirement account. Different tools for different jobs.
